Premium cars also suffer more-realistic damage, as Standard vehicles don’t lose body panels or deform beyond some minor dents and scrapes. On cars from both categories, you can adjust wheel alignment, ride height, spring and damper rates, roll stiffness, gear ratios, downforce levels, brake balance, and front-to-rear torque distribution only on some Premium cars can you make racing-oriented modifications such as reducing weight and adding a roll cage. Standard offerings don’t look markedly better than the cars from GT4, which was released for PlayStation 2. Premium vehicles are rendered more lovingly, with highly detailed dashboard and interior views. Yes, the GT5 has a ton of cars, but we were tremendously disappointed to find that not all of them are rendered to the same level of detail, instead being split into two groups, Premium and Standard. Rather than simply offering the choice of turning driver’s aids on or off-as Forza does-GT5 lets you fine-tune them, adjusting their strength from 1 to 10. Additionally, you can determine whether tire wear and fuel level affect your car’s performance, as well as how much wet roads and off-track surfaces degrade grip levels. Among them are recommended driving lines, skid-recovery force-it magically “finds” more grip in the event of a skid to help maintain control-a setting that auto-corrects oversteer, traction and stability management and control, and the ability to tune ABS intervention.

To make it easier for beginners, however, GT5 boasts an army of adjustable driver assists that would make even Mercedes-Benz jealous. In contrast, Forza is extremely forgiving and provides a much larger margin of error.
The behavior of the cars is startlingly faithful to their real-life counterparts, so they respond accordingly to poor driving and when you miss critical braking and turn-in points. GT5 is marketed as a simulator, and its physics model is extremely realistic. They are for the most part awesome or goofy fun, or both-racing a bunch of identical VW Microbuses on the TG track? Yes, please-and Forza has nothing like them.) B-spec racing carries over from the last installment and allows you to advance through the game not by driving but as a crew chief calling the shots for a roster of virtual drivers. (The special events include stuff like kart races, races on the Top Gear test track, Sébastien Loeb–coached rally challenges, and an AMG Driving Academy at the Nürburgring. In the first-person A-spec, players wheel the cars themselves, unlocking special events, races, and cars. It is the career path that defines GT5, and it’s divided into A- and B-spec modes. In Forza’s arcade mode, for example, most of the cars and tracks are at your immediate disposal, whereas GT5 dishes up only a few hot rides and forces you to unlock or purchase cars for your personal “favorites” list, which can then be used in arcade mode and online.
How they approach these two modes is telling of each game’s character. In GT5, as in Forza, players have two main ways in which to play the game: a career-like path or an arcade mode. Choose the weather and the time of day, and you’re off racing on your new track. Within each sector, the number of turns, the width of the road surface, and the severity of the corners can be dialed in. Although not as free-form as drawing a massive squiggle, the tool allows you to choose a general theme such as tarmac or snow and then define how many sectors the course will have. (Forza 3 added the latter when it came out about a year ago.) For anyone voracious enough to want more, GT5 offers a Course Maker for players to create their own tracks. GT5 adds NASCAR, kart racing, and drifting events. World Rally Championship and touring cars carry over from GT4.
The game features 1031 cars, 27 tracks-including 10 real-world tracks and three rally courses made of dirt and snow-with 71 different layouts, variable weather, and online play with up to 16 racers able to battle for a checkered flag or just mess around. To that end, the fifth edition doesn’t disappoint.
